Magnesium is a real multi-tasker!

More than 300 metabolic processes depend on magnesium. "Nothing works" without it because magnesium is indispensable for many bodily functions. Magnesium:

  • Relaxes the body
  • Has an anti-inflammatory effect
  • Helps with diabetes
  • Increases performance
Unfortunately, it isn't always easy to get enough magnesium.

It helps us cope with stress since it stabilises stress reactions. It also helps regulate muscles and nerves. In addition, magnesium is important for brain function and heart activity. Fat and carbohydrate metabolism work only with magnesium.

If you don't get enough magnesium, your body starts showing certain signs of deficiency.

Signs of magnesium deficiency

One of the most common signs is muscle cramping, for example in the calves. Other signs are tachycardia, fatigue, nervousness, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea and frequent headaches, all which may indicate a magnesium deficiency.

The body also releases magnesium when it sweats, like when you do sport. Hormonal disorders such as hyperthyroidism or parathyroid disorder may also be signs of magnesium deficiency.

Who should take magnesium?

Althletes or people who sweat a lot. Diabetics also need more magnesium as well as people who suffer from long-term gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhea, vomiting, etc. Magnesium is also recommended if you're taking drugs such as laxatives, certain blood pressure medicines or oral contraceptives (the pill).
